Dr. Smart, the visionary behind SmartECHO, was born in Milwaukee. He received his Bachelor of Arts in American History from Harvard University, and went on to obtain his Doctor of Medicine degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He then completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and his Fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Dr. Smart has dedicated his career to improving cardiology for 30+ years. It was during this time that he started to notice the problems in current ECHO imaging and procedures, such as the lack of reproducibility and the need for standardization and intelligent imaging, analytics, and grades of severity and complexity.

Dr. Smart recognized the potential for AI to solve these problems, and started discussing his ideas with his son, Dan, on the long drives from St. Louis to Wisconsin to see the Green Bay Packers play football. With the support of his family, who share his passion for innovation and better patient outcomes, Dr. Smart is turning his vision to a reality-pioneering a future where AI enhances diagnostic accuracy and changes lives.

Dr. Smart currently works at St. Louis University Hospital. He and his wife, Karen, live in south Saint Louis city with their three dogs. His sons Dan and Brian, and daughter Amie, are all involved with SmartECHO.
